Janise holds a Bachelor’s in Social Work as well as a Master’s in Public Administration, and is now pursuing her Ph.D. in Public Affairs. MISSION: The Hampton House Garden Project, launched in 2020 in Reno, Nevada, strives to foster a strong community and advance Black and Indigenous Food Justice in a local "food desert." It was initiated by Lily Baran and her son Oliver, with support from the community and various organizations like Black Community Collective, Reno Food Systems, and the Holland Project. Mutual-aid groups individuals and businesses such as the Great-Basin Co-op, Beloveds, Perenn Bakery also support Hampton House Garden Project.

This transformative project addresses food insecurity, harm reduction, and the need to create strong community bonds and safety in marginalized neighborhoods. Currently serving as a communal garden, refrigerated food pantry, Narcann/test strip distribution, gathering space, and mutual aid kitchen, we are excited about expanding these efforts' capabilities and have done so in 2024, launching the Good Neighbors Warming Center and emergency shelter for women and families that will continue in 2025. And in 2025 our before-school free breakfast and homework club, internship program with Innovations High School, and freeze-dried food recovery.
INFO: In October of 2020, Under the guidance of Native people, community organizers, local farmers, and the willing Renites from all walks of life we launched Hampton House Garden Project, A mutual aid project named after Fred Hampton of the Black Panther Party. Hampton believed that horizontal organization, inclusive of all demographics, was the only way to unify movements toward collective liberation.

Located on Elko Avenue, we are a multi-generational space that hosts a community garden, a refrigerated food and resource pantry, a food recovery compost and processing facility, a harm reduction and reproductive care supply hub, and an organizing creative space and venue. We believe that through mutual aid, community care, and direct action, we can achieve liberation for all.
