Community Conduct Guidelines

Preamble

Strategies Platform LLC resources are built from the support, hard work, and enthusiasm of individuals and organizations around the world. Our passionate community is dedicated to the overarching goal of doing good.

Our community guidelines support this vision, offer guidance on how the community can effectively work together, and establish reasonable expectations for any member of the community to agree to and to follow. These community guidelines ensure that Strategies Platform LLC resources foster a positive and welcoming atmosphere.

Openness

As individual community members, we understand and accept that the ongoing operation and future success of our project is entirely on us and that it is therefore incumbent upon us to find positive ways to interact and to collaborate.

In everything we do, we aspire to maintain transparency, to provide clarity, and to recognize that the complexities of the project require that we provide support and offer patience to all members of the community, be they newcomers or veterans, in order to facilitate understanding and connection.

Debate

We value courteous, lively discussion both online and offline (at conferences, meet-ups, work sessions, etc.), and will treat each other with respect. We recognize that we will lose community support for our priorities and objectives if we fail to treat community members with courtesy and with respect.

We appreciate honest feedback and constructive criticism, and recognize that open, honest conversation often involves more listening than being listened to. We understand that we speak for ourselves and not on behalf of Strategies Platform LLC, 'the community', 'users', 'partners', 'members' etc., unless we can demonstrate how we achieved this trusted spokesperson mandate.

At times, we recognize that debate may be taken negatively or offensively, or may in fact be made in such fashion. We understand that we should apologize when we do say things in a way that is offensive, and we should always endeavor to reconcile disagreements. Ongoing negativity, abusive tones, and bullying cause individuals to be unwilling to express themselves or take part in the conversation. Such instances may violate Strategies Platform LLC’s Community Conduct Guidelines.

Do-ocracy

We value those that contribute to the project and get things done. We all have different priorities and understand that those of others are valid just as are ours. We are all free to move community building relationships forward in ways that make sense to each of us and that do not inhibit others’ use of and contributions to the tools available under the Provider. By doing so, we take responsibility for what we are willing to do or not do, and we understand that complaining about what we feel others should or should not be doing is counter to our culture.

As members of a do-ocracy, we understand that expecting any other community member or the Strategies Platform team to spontaneously make our priorities happen is unreasonable and inconsistent with our culture. Any responsibility in our project can be carried by any contributor who demonstrates the required capacity and competence, and we encourage everyone to be a part of this culture.

Our roadmap is generated by our community and is determined by doers and funders that are able to commit the necessary resources to advance resources. We welcome all opinions on the direction efforts should be heading. Ongoing development is necessarily aligned with those individuals that take the initiative to make things happen.

Collaboration & Promotion

We collaborate routinely since this reduces redundancy and improves the quality of our work. Rather than ‘trying to do everything ourselves’, we align ourselves with complementary projects and organizations for mutual benefit, both inside and outside our community.

As community members, we understand that it is our responsibility to find people with similar priorities and attempt to combine resources in order to realize our objectives. Likewise, it is our responsibility as a community and as individuals to make engagement and collaboration as easily as possible to ensure success. Failure to do so in no way warrants blame on any individual or group of individuals.

As a community, we will endeavor to promote initiatives to raise awareness and encourage collaboration. Likewise, we will promote businesses and individuals that provide aligned services and that contribute back to community resources. We encourage all users to structure their work and contributions in ways that benefit both their own objectives and the wider community.

The Strategies Platform Team

The Strategies Platform team is focused on ensuring the maintenance and production of Provider products, and on stewarding the overall project. The Team manages data fields, releases, infrastructure, security, and various aspects of development, pursues funding, facilitates the community, and carries out various administrative tasks.

Staffed by a small number of team members with varying time commitments to the project, the team is intentionally lightweight, focusing on a narrow range of duties within the project. Team members are paid by Strategies Platform LLC, which generates income from the project, as well as may be compensated through work that individual members engage related to, or not, the software and tools.

The team is committed to maximizing its effectiveness for the good of the project, however its capacity is finite. It cannot fulfill everyone’s priorities nor will it attempt to do so. Like other members of the community, the team will align itself with those that show initiative to make results happen, specifically those initiatives that stand to have the broadest impact.

Purpose

The Provider and partners believe our community should be truly open for everyone. As such, we are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, technical skills, protected classes, or culture.

This agreement outlines our expectations for participant behavior as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior at sanctioned events. We invite all members, partners, funders, contributors, sponsors, volunteers, speakers, attendees, and other participants to help us realize a safe and positive conference experience for everyone.

Open Source & Culture Citizenship

A supplemental goal of this Code of Conduct is to increase open source and culture citizenship by encouraging participants to recognize and strengthen the relationships between our actions and their effects on our community. Communities mirror the societies in which they exist and positive action is essential to counteract the many forms of inequality and abuses of power that exist in society.

If you see someone who is making an extra effort to ensure our community is welcoming, friendly, and encourages all participants to contribute to the fullest extent, please recognize their efforts.

Expected Behavior

  • Help groups raise funds, supplies, and volunteers.

  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
  • Sustained disruption of community events, including talks and presentations.
  • Making false statements.

Weapons Policy

Strategies Platform LLC will align with weapons restrictions in force by local, state, and federal law and the specific venues. At times, you must respect additional weapons restrictions for individual events and locations. Weapons include but are not limited to guns, explosives (including fireworks), and large knives such as those used for hunting or display, as well as any other item used for the purpose of causing injury or harm to others. Anyone seen in possession of one of these items may be asked to leave immediately, and will only be allowed to return without the weapon. Attendees are expected to comply with all state and local laws on this matter.

Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior

Unacceptable behavior from any community member, including sponsors and those with decision-making authority, will not be tolerated.

Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.

If a community member engages in unacceptable behavior, we may take any action deemed appropriate, up to and including a temporary ban or permanent expulsion from the Provider resources and community without warning (and without refund in the case of a paid event).

Reporting Guidelines

If you are subject to or witness unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify us as soon as possible by emailing team@spotlightaction.org. Please read Reporting Guidelines for details.

All reports will be kept confidential. In some cases we may determine that a public statement will need to be made. If that's the case, the identities of all victims and reporters will remain confidential unless those individuals instruct us otherwise. If you believe anyone is in physical danger, please notify appropriate emergency services first. If you are unsure what service or agency is appropriate to contact, include this in your report and we will attempt to notify them.

In your report please include:

  • Your contact info for follow-up contact.
  • Names (legal, nicknames, or pseudonyms) of any individuals involved.
  • If there were other witnesses besides you, please try to include them as well.
  • When and where the incident occurred. Please be as specific as possible.
  • Your account of what occurred.
  • If there is a publicly available record (e.g. a mailing list archive or a public IRC logger) please include a link.
  • Any extra context you believe existed for the incident.
  • If you believe this incident is ongoing.
  • Any other information you believe we should have.

You will receive an email from the Strategies Platform LLC team acknowledging receipt as soon as possible, but within 48 hours. If this is determined to be an ongoing incident or a threat to physical safety, the team's immediate priority will be to protect everyone involved. This means we may delay an "official" response until we believe that the situation has ended and that everyone is physically safe.

Additionally, community organizers are available to help community members engage with local de-escalation teams or to otherwise help those experiencing unacceptable behavior feel safe. In the context of in-person events, organizers will also provide escorts as desired by the person experiencing distress.

Addressing Grievances

Only permanent resolutions (such as bans) may be appealed. To appeal a decision, contact the Strategies Platform Team at team@spotlightaction.com with your appeal and the team and event organizers will review the case.

Nonetheless, we honor The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) of April 21, 2000. COPPA applies to any individually identifiable information about a child that is collected online, such as full name, home address, e-mail address, telephone number or any other information that would allow someone to identify or contact the child.

We collect information about you when it is relevant to do so for the use, maintenance or improvement of our services. We collect information in three primary manners:

  1. Directly through transactions, such as website registrations, in which you provide information.
  2. Automatically through 3rd party services, such as website analytics.
  3. Manually through the organization of public records.

Information You Provide to Us

Examples of information that you may directly provide to us include:

  • basic contact information through website or event registration, such as name, email address, and username;
  • financial information generated through the processing of financial transactions, such as billing address and transaction identification;
  • specific information necessary for proper accommodations during event registration, such as dietary information or information related to clothing size;

Financial information, such as credit card numbers, is not stored in our systems and is managed by and governed by the data policies of the payment processors we use.

We do not ask for, require, or otherwise track information that is unnecessary to the operation of Strategies Platform LLC, such as social security numbers, or equivalent, or date of birth.

Information We Collect Automatically

We collect some information automatically through use of our services and through third party services.

Information We Collect Through Our Services

In addition to data that we explicitly ask for during user interaction, such as name, email, phone, etc., we collect data that browsers, devices, and servers typically make available including IP addresses and language preferences that may be required for the optimal use or general operation of our services. We may approximate device location based on IP addresses.

Information acquired in this manner is not automatically associated with any personally identifiable record or related information. Said information is not anonymised and could be used for the purpose of identification should there be an operational or legal requirement to do so.

Information We Collect Through 3rd Party Services

Strategies Platform LLC uses 3rd party software to monitor and deliver our services. We do not own or control these 3rd parties and therefore cannot ensure that their policies of data collection, storage and use are in compliance with CCPA or GDPR. You should review their rules and policies when using third party software not deployed by the Provider. We can provide a complete and up to date list of 3rd parties we use by request to team@spotlightaction.org.

We use website analytics software (Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Google Adsense) to track website user engagement and related behavior for the purpose of improving our services. Data collected includes IP addresses, unique device identifiers, browser types, device types, operating systems, etc. as well as behavioral data such as clicks, page views, durations, visit dates, etc.

Analytics are used to gauge interest in the overall project as well as to determine the effectiveness of websites under our control. Analytics are not used in any way to personally identify users and therefore are not governed by this privacy policy. Users may avoid analytics tracking by declining the use of cookies.

Information from Cookies & Other Technologies

The Provider may use technologies such as cookies, Pixel tags, web beacons, or similar, which are typically small blocks of code placed on website and emails, to help us identify, track usage, access preference for our services, and otherwise track and understand campaign effectiveness and/or deliver targeted advertising.

Sharing Information

We do not sell, trade, give or otherwise share our users’ private personal information without direct consent and knowledge. We do share information about you in the limited circumstances spelled out below and with appropriate safeguards on your privacy:

Subsidiaries, Employees, and Independent Contractors

We may disclose information about you to our disclosed partners, subsidiaries, our employees, subprocessors (both inside and outside of the EEA) and individuals who are our independent contractors that need to know the information in order to help us provide our services or to process the information on our behalf. We require our disclosed partners, subsidiaries, our employees and our subprocessors (both inside and outside of the EEA) and individuals to follow this Privacy Policy for personal information that we share with them.

Third Party Vendors

We may share information about you with third party vendors who need to know information about you in order to provide their services to us and to you. This group includes vendors that help us provide our services to you (like payment providers that process your credit and debit card information) and those that help us understand and enhance our services (like analytics providers). When possible, we require vendors to agree to privacy commitments in order to share information with them.

As Required by Law

We may disclose information about you in response to a subpoena, court order, or other governmental request.

To Protect Rights and Property

We may disclose information about you when we believe that doing so is reasonably necessary to protect the rights of Strategies Platform LLC, third parties, or the public at large. For example, if we believe that there is an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury, we may disclose information related to the emergency without delay.

With Your Consent

We may share and disclose information with your consent or at your direction.

Aggregated and De-Identified Information

We may share information that has been aggregated or reasonably de-identified, so that the information could not reasonably be used to identify you. For example, Warming Center Volunteer Survey Summary.

Published Support Requests

We may share information if you send us a support request (for example, via a support email or through our support forums). We reserve the right to publish that request in order to help us clarify or respond to your request or to help us support other users.

Information Shared Publicly

Information that you choose to make public is disclosed publicly. That means, of course, that information within any content that you make public, including your name, email, user ID, etc., on any of the digital platforms that we create or maintain on your behalf are all available to others. Public information may also be indexed by search engines or used by third parties.

Security

While no online service is 100% secure, we work very hard to protect information about you against unauthorized access, use, modification, or destruction.

  • We use physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect personal information that you have shared with us.
  • We use standard methods of authentication to ensure that you may access, control and secure your data.
  • We use industry-standard SSL-encryption to protect data and data transmissions. Please note that using an SSL is not a guarantee that information may not be accessed, disclosed, altered or destroyed by a breach of firewalls, secure server software, and the like.

If the Provider learns of a security breach, we may attempt to notify you electronically so that you can take appropriate protective steps. By using our sites, products, and services or providing personal information to us, you agree that we can communicate with you electronically regarding security, privacy, and administrative issues relating to your use of those sites, products, and services. We may post a notice on our applicable web sites if a security breach occurs. If this happens, you will need a web browser enabling you to view the applicable Web sites. We may also send an email to you at the email address you have provided to us in these circumstances. Depending on where you live, you may have a legal right to receive notice of a security breach in writing. To receive free written notice of a security breach (or to withdraw your consent from receiving electronic notice), you should notify us at team@strategiesplatform.org.

Data Storage

All and any information that we gather from you is stored and processed on our secure servers or those of our trusted partners. We implement strict technological and procedural measures to keep your data safe and secure.  We may keep data regarding financial transactions, such as past invoices and/or contributions made to or through Strategies Platform LLC.

At any point in time you have the right to request that we delete or obfuscate any data that may be used to identify you as an individual. However, please bear in mind that by doing so, you may be required to cancel all or a part of the services that we provide you as we may not be able to provide you with that service without certain data including Continuing Education Certificate verifications.

Changing Your Preferences and Personal Information

You can edit your account information with our services at any time. Most personal information you may provide is entirely optional. You can delete your account by visiting the applicable account deletion page; however, please note that some personal information, primarily your contact information, may remain in our records to the extent necessary to protect our legal interests, to maintain a history of past financial transactions or document compliance with regulatory, grant, or other funding requirements.

You have several choices available when it comes to managing information about you:

  • Limit the Information that You Provide: If you contact us you can choose not to provide the optional information. Please keep in mind that if you do not provide this information we may not be able to fully respond to you.
  • Opt-Out of Electronic Communications: You may opt out of receiving promotional messages from us. Just follow the instructions in those messages. If you opt out of promotional messages, we may still send you other messages, like those about your account and legal notices.
  • Set Your Browser to Reject Cookies: At this time, CiviCRM does not respond to “do not track” signals across all of our Services. However, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove or reject browser cookies before using Provider’s websites, with the drawback that certain features of our classroom and websites may not function properly without the aid of cookies.

If we make changes, we will notify you by maintaining a change log, and, in some cases, we may provide additional notice (such as adding a statement to our homepage or sending you a notification through e-mail or your dashboard).
